April 18, 2023

FMCSA Updates SMS Website

FMCSA has updated the Safety Measurement System (SMS) Website with the March 31, 2023
results. Complete SMS results are available to enforcement users and motor carriers that are logged into the SMS Website.

With the March 31, 2023 SMS results, FMCSA has updated the SMS methodology to include the latest changes to violations recorded as part of the roadside inspection program. FMCSA has released new software used to record violations found during roadside inspections. This software often uses different violation codes from existing software. To account for these new violation codes, SMS has incorporated violations cited under these new codes that were discovered on and after February 1, 2023. Only violations cited on or after February 1 are included in SMS calculations. For more details and a complete list of violations, see the SMS Appendix A spreadsheet.

FMCSA Wants to Hear Your Feedback on the Proposed Changes to SMS

FMCSA has announced proposed changes to SMS to reduce and prevent crashes. Motor carriers can visit the CSA Prioritization Preview website, log in, and preview how their own data would appear under the proposal. Companies are encouraged to preview their prioritization results and submit their feedback on these proposed changes to FMCSA at regulations.gov. Other users will be able to review sample pages.
FMCSA strongly encourages stakeholders to participate in the preview and submit their comments to the public docket. Comments are due by May 16, 2023. Learn more at https://csa.fmcsa.dot.gov/prioritizationpreview.

Clearinghouse Query Notifications Update

As of March 8, 2023, an employer is notified via email when a driver they have queried has new information recorded in their Clearinghouse record within 12 months of a pre-employment or annual query. The Query History is also updated to reflect when new information is available. Within 24 hours of receiving a notification, the employer should complete a full follow-on query to determine if the new information results in the driver having a prohibited status; there is no charge for this follow-on query.

For more details, see the new and updated frequently asked questions on employer notifications and annual queries. All frequently asked questions are available on the Clearinghouse website.
